Monsterverse series.  The movie only briefly explains what the Hollow Earth is and jumps right into the action. The Hollow Earth is an extra layer of Earth where prehistoric creatures and mythological animals, like dragons, still exist.  The Titans are prehistoric animals who are the basis of all legends. Kong is a Titan that resembles a giant ape. 

In this universe, the monarch, a branch of the government, was set up in the 1970s to monitor the creatures who live in the Hollow Earth and, if necessary, defend humanity from these creatures.  The monarch monitors Kong as he travels across the Hollow Earth, searching for more of his kind.   

Godzilla, a giant lizard (also a Titan), meanwhile, is searching for a new place to call home.  Godzilla periodically fights other titans for dominance. Along the path, Kong is led to a tribe of giant apes ruled by a Titan called Scar King, an ancient giant ape feared for his brutality. In his first encounter with Scar King, he is defeated and retreats.   

Kong gets assistance from the monarch for a hand injury  with a

•prototype gauntlet.  Kong goes to the surface to seek help from Godzilla but reaches him.  In the end, Kong and Godzilla defeat the giant ape, and Kong becomes the leader of the tribe of the Giant Apes, earning the title of King Kong.  I recommend this movie to any fan of monster movies and Godzilla fans.
