Parks and Recreation Show Season 1 Review

Updated: Nov 22, 2023

I did enjoy Lisa, the main character of the series, in all the episodes I was able to see, which were sadly only six episodes of season one, which was disappointing because I know there was 7th episode that finished off-season one. I couldn’t watch that. I did think at first that Lisa, being the main character of the series, would be almost competent in her position. However, we learn as the series goes on that she was only placed in her current position because of her mother. We also learned that Lisa’s drive to succeed is in some way driven by the fact she wishes to be accepted by her mother, who seems only to want her daughter to get married, which is given the time. This takes place in a very narrow view of what her child is capable of. I found her assistant, Tom, to be highly unlikable at best and at worst, a blatant dirtbag who doesn’t seem to care at all about his marriage, and I honestly don’t understand why the character feels that he should cheat on his wife no matter how poorly his marriage is going. I also thought that Lisa should go to counseling so that she could express her true feelings towards all her office mates because I feel like she suppresses a lot of built-up anger over past issues that she cannot resolve with her mother just because of her mother’s cold attitude towards her and limited expectations for her. When all Lisa wants to do is be something similar to her mother, which, though I think her goal is flawed because no one can copy another person's success precisely the way the original person did, her mother seems to exemplify every negative quality that a politician can have. But I thought Lisa’s boss, Ron, was one of the worst television bosses I’ve ever seen, at least so far. I mean, the guy blatantly doesn’t care about his position. He wants to hire the most incompetent people, and he seems to want to do as little work as possible. There is also a character that I think Chris Pratt, plays the boyfriend of Ann, a person we meet in the first episode, who we learn later is a nurse. She seems to be the only competent character in the entire cast, as far as I could tell. I liked Lisa, the main character, and Ann, the nurse, and that is it. I like Lisa because even though her head was in the clouds, she was filled with big dreams that would likely never come true. Lisa was trying to be helpful with her job, and she was the only one who seemed enthusiastic about what she did for a living. The rest of them hate their jobs and seem only to want things to grind to a halt while they do as little work as possible, an attitude that I hate
